High Energy Physics: Past, Present and Future Ren-Yuan Zhu California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA 91125, USA Abstract. Precision crystal calorimeters traditionally play an important role in high energy physics experiments. In the last two decades, it faces a challenge to maintain its precision in a hostile radiation environment. This paper reviews the performance of crystal calorimeters constructed for high energy physics experiments and the progress achieved in understanding crystal’s radiation damage as well as in developing high quality scintillating crystals for particle physics. Potential applications of new generation scintillating crystals of high density and high light yield, such as LSO and LYSO, in particle physics experiments is also discussed.

Measurement of Polarisation Transfer in Hyperon Photoproduction at Mami

The photoproduction of K mesons is an important challenge to recent QCD based chiral perturbation theories in the strange quark sector and is an important constraint on the nucleon excitation spectrum. We present preliminary data from a new high precision measurement using the Crystal Ball detector. The measurement pioneers a new technique for tagging strangeness using detailed cluster analysis...

Calorimeters for Precision Timing Measurements in High Energy Physics

Current and future high energy physics particle colliders are capable to provide instantaneous luminosities of 1034 cm-2s-1 and above. The high center of mass energy, the large number of simultaneous collision of beam particles in the experiments and the very high repetition rates of the collision events pose huge challenges. They result in extremely high particle fluxes, causing very high occu...

A Study on Radiation Damage in BGO and PWO-II Crystals

We report in this paper an investigation on radiation damage in 20 cm long BGO crystals produced at SIC as well as 20 cm long PWO-II crystals produced at BTCP for the proposed Panda experiment at GSI. The optical and scintillation properties of BGO and PWOII crystals, such as transmittance, light output and light response uniformity, were measured before and after γ-ray irradiations at differen...

Particle Identification in 4th

The importance of particle identification Physics measurements often depend on the efficiency and the purity of an event ensemble, and the efficiency is a product of several small efficiencies for the isolation and identification of each event feature. The 4th detector has been designed from the beginning with particle identification in mind, knowing that we may be seeking small signals and tha...

CaloGAN: Simulating 3D High Energy Particle Showers in Multi-Layer Electromagnetic Calorimeters with Generative Adversarial Networks

The precise modeling of subatomic particle interactions and propagation through matter is paramount for the advancement of nuclear and particle physics searches and precision measurements. The most computationally expensive step in the simulation pipeline of a typical experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the detailed modeling of the full complexity of physics processes that govern t...
